In the not-so-distant past, the shelf was considered almost exclusively a tool for storage. How to contain and how to ensure proper preservation over time was a question related more to the condition of the property and the state of systems such as lighting, air conditioning, and fire protection.

In recent years, however, there has been a fundamental shift by asking the shelf to become a storage facility itself : from storage to preservation. A change that may seem superficial but, instead, has involved many aspects of the problem such as ensuring proper air circulation within an environment that needs to be kept closed to prevent the entry of dust, controlling temperature and humidity within these environments, preventing mold growth and the proliferation of pathogens on contained goods, and protecting the contents from unwanted and unauthorized access.

One can thus finally think of the shelf not only and no longer as an extrinsic artifact and not involved in the larger project of conservation and protection of the artistic heritage, but finally as an integral part of it, with which it is in functional and necessary symbiosis.

To this must still be added the aesthetic factor: the steel shelf, sometimes painted, sometimes simply galvanized, certainly did not contribute to the enhancement of the contents. Today it is an integral part of it, combining soft and harmonious forms with its typical functionalities.
