NEW FRONTIER OF HBIM FOR SMART PRESERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL PLACES, THE MUSEUM IN THE DIGITAL AGE: STORYTELLING, FRUITION, NEW PARADIGMS - RO.ME Museum Exhibition

NEW FRONTIER OF HBIM FOR SMART PRESERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL PLACES, THE MUSEUM IN THE DIGITAL AGE: STORYTELLING, FRUITION, NEW PARADIGMS

Organized by the BHiLAB of the CNR Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences.

Among the latest contributions of heritage digitization research is the emerging theme of Building Information Model (BIM) being applied to the management of museums and the collections they house.

In these places intended for the display and dissemination of cultural heritage, it is important to manage all the information about both the container, which may be a valuable historic building, monument, or archaeological site, and their contents, represented by the various collections of works of art, objects of material culture, and evidence of the past.

These ancient bodies of great historical and artistic significance, churches, palaces, castles, monasteries or archaeological sites, are used in a different way than their original function and are visited by hundreds, sometimes thousands of users who certainly affect their life and use, with issues of accessibility, safety for people and works, and prevention in case of health emergencies.

In such an articulated and complex context, the HBIM4lazioHERITAGE project, funded by the Lazio Region and coordinated by ISPC CNR’s BHiLAB in collaboration with Sapienza University (DSDRA Department), is exploring the possibilities of integration between HBIM and IoT systems, recent technologies for real-time data acquisition from heterogeneous devices and smart sensors.

With the project, the prototype of the HBIM-IoT platform is being developed, which will enable the acquisition, synchronization control of dynamic data streams, real time information, and integration with previously collected information, in a single sharing and management environment applied to the parametric model of the museum, resulting in the spatial placement of each piece of information.

The experiment is taking place at the Cloister of the Church of Santa Maria della Pace, an extraordinary example of Renaissance architecture, among the first works designed by Donato Bramante in Rome. The building is currently home to the Dart Museum of Rome, in which exhibitions, temporary displays and cultural events of contemporary art are organized.

Also in the same context, BHiLAB has developed an HBIM platform aimed at optimizing processes for the conservation, management, protection and enhancement of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
